This blog aims to bring alive the family history information I have been given with records from Ormskirk Church, Mawdesley and Croston as far back as 1558. Many thanks go to relatives Jonathon Hopper, UK & especially Anthony Brown, Australia for all of the research they have undertaken and to Andy Scarisbrick for his significant support. John Whalley is my 2nd cousin twice removed.
Father: John Whalley (1867-1940)
Mother: Helen Earnshaw (1871- d.18 Jun 1950) Longridge, Alston, Lancashire.
John was the grandchild of Ann Ainscough and Henry Earnshaw - see previous blog about the EARNSHAW link.
Richard Harris from Australia writes:
"Hi Barbara
Lance Corporal John Whalley killed in WW1 was my mum’s cousin. John Whalley (1867 – 1940) was a great uncle of mine – he married Helen Earnshaw who was sister to my grandmother, Louisa Earnshaw. Their mother Ann died when Louisa was young (Ann Earnshaw nee Ainscough – sister of Thomas, the same family line as you have. So John and Helen then adopted Louisa and she took the surname “Earnshaw-Whalley”. I don’t know a lot about John Whalley - the Lance Corporal, but I believe he is in the photo I sent you (I’ll have to check). In reality John was Louisa’s nephew but was also her stepbrother!!! Mum said she had a cousin who was killed in WW1 – I’ll ask my sisters if they remember any more."

Margaret WHITTLE (b Sept 1856) & Edward AINSCOUGH (bApril 1860- June 1902)
It was lovely to receive an email from Anne Clark (neé Ainscough) yesterday regarding links to this branch of the Ainscough family......and great to see Anne had found the link via Google, hopefully others will too!
You can see more images, including census detail & description on my Flickr pages at:

Anne Clark from Hampshire writes:
"I have just been surfing Google for Ainscough family history and by lucky chance came across your Blog. I just had to send you a quick note as I think that we must be related as I have been searching Hugh and Ellen Ainscough family tree. Hugh and Ellen (Cowley) Ainscough are my GG grandparents.
My grand father was Edward Ainscough (1890-1976) and his father was also called Edward (son of Hugh and Ellen) born April 1860 and died 1st June 1902 aged 42 years and occupation Railway signal man. This Edward married Margaret Whittle on 24 September 1881. I have a copy of Hugh Ainscoughs death certificate and it still lists his occupation as farmer although you say that he ran a pub. You seem to have got a lot further with your research than my pathetic attempts as I have got stuck on Hugh's father Thomas. I hope you don't mind but I have printed off all your notes which I will spend a long time reading!
Hoping that we may be able to exchange further information."
