Old Mersey Times - Ainscough references

Hi Barbara
The main reason for this email is to ask you if you have a Hugh Ainscough from Burscough? Because there is an article on the Old Mersey Times website about the closure in 1881 of the Southport and West Lancashire Banking Company. Its from the Liverpool Journal. There is a Hugh Ainsclough (notice there is an L in the middle of the surname, but it still could be the same family) who was listed as one of the bank's directors.

Thanks for this Sylvia - (I think that all refs. to Ainscough may have been misspelt on this site as Ainsclough - typos??) yes, Hugh Ainscough is Hugh of H&R Ainscough, corn millers, Burscough and Mary & Anthony from Parbold are direct descendants. I have a lot on this blog about them already - see previous posts. H&R Ainscough were the Parbold RC church benefactors. A search of the 'Old Mersey Times' site for "Ainsclough" reveals the following 5 refs. nb. but nothing is found for Ainscough!

Well, Friday 20th July proved to be a busy day with 2 Ainscough email queries, both of them are infact part of our much extended Ainscough family. One from Ann Reynolds (see previous entry), the other from Lorraine C in Perth, Australia.
Lorraine's father still lives in Mawdesley, now 80 years old, his mother was Annie Ainscough of Mawdseley. Lorraine offers the following information:
"Hello Barbara,
I read with interest the page on the Ainscough family in Mawdesley. I looked up the 1901 census to find my grandmother , Annie Ainscough, who was seven at the time. She was living in Aspull near Wigan with her family, her mother had died and she had three older brothers: Thomas aged 13, James aged 11, John aged 9 and Annie. Her father is named as John Ainscough and 44 in 1901. He was a coal miner and is shown as being born in Mawdesley. So he must have been born in 1857.
Annie went to live in Brooklyn, New York in her teenage years with relatives after her mother died, but she returned to Aspull and married my grandfather in 1920 I believe. She married Michael. She had six surviving children who grew up in this area : James, Peter, Irene, John, Fred and Thomas.
Annie died very young in the 1930's leaving a very young family. My father remembers how popular she was and how the family would receive presents from her family in New York. I have her name as my middle name.
My father and siblings still live in the area and would love to know more on the Ainscough family from Mawdesley where their grandfather was born. My father remembers two of his uncles living with them when he was a boy.
I now live in Perth, Western Australia but I will be visiting Lancashire later in the year. If you can make any connections Barbara, I would be very grateful. Thank you for your time.

Lorraine, I'm pleased to say that the good news is we are related - so welcome cousin! I think we are 4th cousins once removed....I have attached an image to show you your family line. Annie's father was John Ainscough b.22 March 1857, one of 9 children. Annie's grandparents were Ellen (Eastham) b1821-1886 & John Ainscough b.1820-1885 and Great grandparents were Thomas Ainscough & Betty (Whitehead), also my direct line. Which makes Annie's grandad John Ainscough b.1820 brother to my GGG grandad Hugh Ainscough b.1822-1882 m. Ellen (Cowley).

I have just been looking on the Ainscough Family History-Mawdesley site and found Edward Ainscough who was married to Dorothy Cowell then to Mary Ann Harrison,this Edward is my greatgrandad Richard's brother,his parents were James Ainscough & Jane Sergant (as spelt on my ggrandad's birth cert) on IGI it is spelt Serjeant, do we have a connection? Look forward to hearing from you. By the way James' son Richard my GGrandad was born 28 Sept 1842 Standish,Wigan. He married Harriet Latham on 9 Feb 1864 in St John's Chapel Wigan and he died 25 Jan 1891 at Rainhill Asylum.

Ann - welcome cousin!
I am pleased to say Ann that there is a connection - we are related all be it very distant! From the records given to me, researched by Anthony Brown, Aus. James & Jane had around 10 children. I have also found their gravestone in St Peter & Paul's RC Churchyard, Mawdesley along with a few of their children & grandchildren - see the images above. However, I have not had time to work out who they all are on the stone but it looks as though we have both James & Jane, their son Richard no.1 (4yrs), daughter Margaret (20yrs), Elizabeth wife1 (24yrs) of John & daughters Jane (3yrs) & Mary Jane (2yrs) and finally James the son of James & Jane (19yrs). You say your great-grandad was Richard, who was probably the youngest of the 10 children and also their second child named Richard, the 1st Richard Ive already mentioned, died at only 4yrs.
The tree outline looks something like this- if you can provide me with further or more accurate detail this would be appreciated.

I like your photos - I checked out those on your website - some terrific shots of the countryside and I appreciate the ones of our Ainscough family history – I particularly like the shot of you in the Old Oak Inn – where our ggggrandad Hugh was landlord. I must visit there next time I’m in the UK – hopefully next September.
Attached is my family at my recent birthday – after 50 I’m not counting any more – my wife Liz, daughter Ella and her boyfriend Josh at the back – and son Chris next to Liz.

One of the photos you had was of a cricket team, and I notice you referred to a Thomas Ainscough playing for Lancashire – is that Thomas, Hugh’s son? I remember elsewhere seeing a Thomas Ainscough as a past player for Lancashire, because my granddad Walsh (who married Louisa Earnshaw-Whalley –daughter of Anne Ainscough) was also a good cricketer, who played for Colne in the Lancashire League. I had heard he may have played for Lancashire, but I couldn’t find his name amongst past players – but I did find Thomas Ainscough!! Unfortunately I can’t remember the website, but I’ll see if I can find it again.

"Dear Barbara,
I have been researching my maternal grandmother’s family tree for the last three years. Her name was Annie AINSCOUGH. I have traced the family back to Chorley in Lancashire. James Ainscough, lived with his wife Winifred Rosbottom and their two sons Henry and Jerimiah, at Bengal St, Chorley, Lancashire. This information appears on the 1841 census. The family subsequently moved to Liverpool. Henry Ainscough became a cooper and moved with his brother Charles to London, where they lived in Church Row ,Limehouse, Stepney. They then moved to Dublin to work with the Guinness Brewery, circa 1865.
I have done all my research from Dublin and I wondered if you have come across this Ainscough line in your research? I would love some more information the earliest is a marriage entry in Standish parish (St Wilifred’s C of E) for James and Winifred 28/08/1834. I cannot research further back from that date as I live here in Dublin.
All the family here in Dublin are Roman Catholics.
There is an entry for a James Ainscough son of Henry and Margaret in St John’s RC, Wigan 1/10/1814 which would tie-in with the age profile, but that is all the info I have.

If you have any information no matter how slight, I would be most appreciative.

Ps Some of the family moved back to FLINT? Circa 1880’s. I am sure the family must still be there as I get the impression it is a rather small area in Wales!

Cowley burials- Mawdesley RC Churchyard

Thomas Cowley (d. 1912 age 83) married Margaret Ainscough 1 (d.1872 age 46) & Margaret Ainscough 2 (d.1918 age 82) (my GGGG aunt & cousin of MA1) also Mary Cowley, daughter of the above who died June 28th 1869 age 13.



Thomas Edward Cowley (d.1940 age 79) & Eleanor his wife (d.1937 age 62). Thomas was a son of Thomas C above d. 1912). I believe this Thomas Edward C to be the grandfather of Gerard Swarbrick who draws the Old Mawdesley maps.


This might possibly be Richard Cowley & wife, brother of Ellen & Thomas?


This is likely to be Edward, eldest child & brother of Thomas & Ellen Cowley. The gravestone also mentions Alice Wright who I think maybe Alice Cowley, sister of Edward, Thomas & Ellen, but not absolutely sure because I dont know if she married a Wright.

Sylvia Wilcox, Aus (nsatstanwelltops@smartchat.net.au) is a direct descendant of the Cowleys, her ancestor being Everilda Cowley, one of the many sisters of Ellen Cowley (my GGG grandmother) & Thomas Cowley (my GGGG uncle).
The gravestones above can all be found in St Peter & Pauls RC church, Mawdesley.

There is no doubt that the Ainscough & Cowley families were good friends and neighbours in historic Mawdesley. The relationship between the 2 families can be traced back to the mid 1800’s.
My GGG grandad Hugh Ainscough (b. 1822-1882) married (1843) Ellen (Elizabeth) COWLEY (1824-1895), who on 6 Jun 1841 was recorded as being the family servant (age 15yrs) at Blackmore Grove, Mawdesley, home of William Finch

Thomas Cowley (b 21 Dec 1828, Bispham), married twice, both of his wives were called Margaret Ainscough.

His first wife was Margaret Ainscough (b 1826 - d 1872), daughter of John Ainscough (1794-1872) and Margaret (Wignall, 1797-1866) and cousin of my GGG grandad Hugh Ainscough. Margaret and Hugh shared the same grandparents, John Ainscough (1752-1835) m Margaret Worthington (1751-1835). His second wife was cousin of his first wife and sister of Hugh my GGG grandad - all very complex & intertwined hey?


From information provided from various sources this is what I know about the Cowley family.

"Oh, and in St Helens church, I found the marriage of Mary Ainscough to Thomas Eccleston. Mary was the sister of Hugh (d. 1813), John and James.
Margaret Ainscough d. 1812 was another sister of Mary, Hugh, John and James above."

"In the name of God Amen I Margaret Ainscough of Ormskirk in the County of Lancaster Spinster, being of sound mind and understanding do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner following that is to say I give and bequeath my clothes and wearing apparel to and amongst my Sister Ann Stopforth, to my niece Mary Ainscough daughter of my Brother James Ainscough, to my Ellen Watkinson my niece daughter of my late Sister Jane Watkinson, And to Mary Worthington my niece daughter of my late Sister Elizabeth Worthington, to be divided by my sister Mary Eccleston in the way and manner she thinks best."

I have the Will of William Stopforth 1672 of Lathom.
In the Will, he mentions his sister as one of the executors, Jane Aiscough.

If you do manage to visit the Our Lady & All Saints RC Church, Parbold then take a moment to view Lancaster House, it really is stunning! At the Church from the rear car park and facing the Church, Lancaster House can be just seen on the left through hedges & trees. This was the family home of Hugh AINSCOUGH (1816-1894) and Susanna (FAIRCLOUGH) Ainscough (1830-1923)- Parbold Benefactors. As far as I know Hugh had commissioned it to be built and it was here that the 12 Ainscough children were raised, many of them were born here too.

“Between 1929 and 1947 the former home of Hugh Ainscough and his family was rented to the Sisters of Notre Dame, of Everton Valley, Liverpool, who used it for short term and summer holidays.
Records state that the first Mass to be offered there was on March 6, 1930, but to be strictly accurate Fr. Brown, with special permission from the Holy See, had offered it several times there during Hugh Ainscough's illness. With the bombing of Liverpool during the Second World War the entire Everton Valley community evacuated to Parbold, May 3, 1941, and remained until 1945 although some remained in retirement.

John Farley 1863-1896 -Murdered!

If like me you are asking yourself "Who was John Farley?" then read on....he was my Great great Uncle.

John Farley - b.1863-d.1896
John Farley was the brother of Catherine (Farley) Ainscough who married my Great grandad Henry Ainscough - see blog entry December 14th 2006. "John Farley went to sea in 1877 as a ships boy, as an ordinary seaman in Nov. 1877, as an A.B. from July 1881 and received his Certificate of Competency (no. 018169) as a mate on 15th April 1887, as a first mate 17th December 1891 and as a Master on 21st December 1895. He then sailed on the SS. Rosse as a mate (no.74475. reg. Liverpool) but in New York was shot by a pistol in the chest by one of the sailors (inflicted by E. Smith)and died in Brooklyn Hospital, NY, 27th May 1896, age 35. A report of the incident appeared in the New York Times of 19th May 1896. His papers gave his birth date as 31st March 1863, town of Dublin, County of Dublin."

(Medical):Extract from New York Times of Sun May 17 1896 page 16 "Incoming Steamships today ROSSE St. Lucia May 9" New York Times Tuesday May 19 1896 page1 "SECOND MATE JOHN FARLEY SHOT His brutality to a sailorman may cost him his life. John Farley, second mate of the steamship ROSSE, lying at Martins Stores, Furman St. Brooklyn, was shot twice yesterday morning by Ernest Smith, one of the sailors. Farley, it is said, treated the sailors in a brutal manner on the voyage from England, to this port, and was particularly abusive to Smith, who rankled under the assault until yesterday. Farley had ordered a sailor named Evans to go forward and scrub the decks, and when he did so another officer asked Evans what he was doing there, as he had been sent aloft to furl the sails. Evans told him that Farley had sent him forward, and Farley, hearing the remark, knocked the sailor down and gave him a severe cut over the eye. Farley met Smith ten minutes later and threatened to kick him because he did not move quickly enough in obeying an order given by Farley. Farley, the members of the crew say, then ran after Smith and struck him on the face, knocking him down. As Smith arose he drew a revolver and fired twice, one of the shots striking the mate in the breast near the throat and the other entering a little lower. The mate was taken to the Brooklyn Hospital and Smith, Evans and four others were arrested. Farley's injuries are said to be of a serious nature."

Extract Papist Estates 3rd July 1717 - Hugh AISCOUGH

I met with my cousin Mike Ainscough the other day when he temporarily leant me a packed folder full of allsorts of Ainscough History......it turns out that much of this is information originally researched by Tony Brown, Aus. & my dad Peter. So many thanks Tony & dad! But like I said it is a temporary loan and has to go back to Uncle John asap....so Im manically sifting through, photocopying bits & pieces Ive never seen before & hope to have it all scanned & blogged for all to see. Oh & by the way, just in case you think I am a lousy speller & have difficulties with grammar or a stutter - Ive copied it word for word & letter for letter - honestly!

Anyway, Ive heard relatives talk about the 1717 Papists Return often & here we have the extract relating to Hugh Aiscough b. 1689-1745, Mawdesley.....I had a little problem with some of the vocab. so Jonathon Hopper has kindly translated the following words:

boon n. A benefit bestowed, especially one bestowed in response to a request. A timely blessing or benefit
messuage:A dwelling house, its outbuildings and land, from Old French mesnage
Appentence---- A strong wanting of what promises joy and pleasure. (Cant be right!!!)

I Hugh Ayscough of Mawdesley in the County of Lancaster Yeoman in pursuance of the late Act of Parliament Instituted an Act to oblige Papists to register their names & Real Estates do by this writing Under my hand Desire you or one of you to Register my Name & Estate in the Severall Lands Tenem.ts & Hereditam.ts herein after mentioned Scituate lying & being in the said County of Lancaster in the manner & words ffollowing viz:
